On Thursday, Maj. Gen. Iftah Ron-Tal, the commander of Israel's land forces, visited his son Omri, daughter-in law, and grandson in Shirat Hayam, a seaside outpost. Ron-Tal kissed six-month-old Nir-Chaim, and asked Omri to leave with his family. "He promised me to leave without using any force and I appreciate it," Ron-Tal said. The withdrawal has been an emotional experience for many Israelis. "The whole army hurts," Ron-Tal said.
