Most of the reports do a poor job of describing how gangrene occured (in fact, most don't even mention gangrene), so here is a technical supplement from IRIS's neurologist:
Apparently the cause of the problem was an arterial blood clot. This produces necrosis, which means dying of tissue. Gangrene is infection of dying tissue, which would not be surprising since it is exposed to intestinal contents.
