The long-term Palestinian strategy was
predicted by IRIS prior to the Gaza withdrawal. A Gaza beachhead for terror would be established as a waystation toward the rugged high ground of the West Bank, from which low-lying central Israel is largely indefensible. If Olmert's withdrawal is implemented, the West Bank will become a terror haven with ever-increasing attacks on central Israel. Today's story of the interception of terrorists with battle armaments is the latest of a string of similar stories of Gaza terrorists (e.g.
this and
this) infiltrating Israel using the same open route:
Security Service Arrests Two Hamas Infiltrators
The Shin Bet security service on Thursday announced the April 14 arrest of two Hamas members who infiltrated into Israel with the intent of carrying out attacks and kidnapping soldiers. The two Palestinians from Jabalya in Gaza infiltrated the southern Negev through Sinai. They were in possession of firearms and grenades, as well as money intended for funding the establishment of a West Bank terrorist cell.
Of course, the reason this story was released by the Olmert administration is to emphasize the security success.
The much larger context, however, is being covered up, the inexorable march toward the nightmare scenario illustrated here,
originally published by IRIS in 1993.
