US Still Fighting al-Qaeda With Self-Imposed Shackles

Here is an interesting tidbit from today's news that an American convert to Islam, Adam Yehiye Gadahn, was featured on al-Qaeda's latest propanda videotape:

The CIA said it had conducted a technical review on the videotape and concluded the voice is al-Zawahri's. A CIA spokeswoman said the agency is not authorized to conduct such analysis on U.S. citizens such as Gadahn.

Barring a miracle, a future nuclear jihad attack on an American city is now a near-certainty. Add this entry to the long list of IRIS items for the commission of inquiry into how the Global Jihad succeeded in a nuclear terror strike. (Assuming, of course, that any newspaper considers it relevant to note that the attacker's identity is "Muslim" and assuming that there are none of the typical official denials of terrorism.)

It is philosophically incorrect to say that the person in the video is an American. To be an American, philosophically, requires that you empathize with and root for America. If you root for the destruction of America and hate it, it is incorrect to define yourself as an American.

The problem is that we have made citizenship a legal, not an emotional / philosophical, ascription. Legally, as the article and video show, you can be an American and think America is an evil that must be destroyed. We must reassert the true meaning of this word, "American" in policy and conversation to save its intended and important significance.
