Palestinian terrorist organizations were studying the Lebanese-Israeli war to learn how to play on Israel's weaker points. 'Samaria has become the land of Islamic Jihad following the disengagement.' Approximately 15,000 guns, 4 million bullets, 2,300 pistols, 38 rockets, dozens of anti-tank missiles, 15 tons of TNT, 400 RPGs, and 10-15 Katyushas had been smuggled into Gaza from Egypt.
After three to five years of this kind of weapons transfer, he warned, Israel will face a situation similar to south Lebanon.
"At this point, anybody who wants to smuggle something through the Philadelphi route can apparently do so," Diskin said. "You can smuggle anything through Philadelphi except maybe a tank or plane."

12,000 Buildings in Israel Hit by Rocket Attacks
When Olmert crowed about the war's success in destroying Hezbollah long-range missiles, he should have included mention of these medium range Katyushas as well. Assuming that Lebanon polices its border with Syria, Israel would therefore be much safer now.

Be prepared for the possibility of a deal in which Israeli hostages are exchanged, including Ron Arad, for devastating long-term strategic concessions. When those concessions lead to mind-boggling disasters later, the Israeli public will scream again for a commission of inquiry.

At an Islamic Jihad summer camp, Hisham, one of the camp directors, explains: "We teach the children the truth. How the Jews persecuted the prophets and tortured them. We stress that the Jews killed and slaughtered Arabs and Palestinians every chance they got. Most important, the children understand that the conflict with the Jews is not over land, but rather over religion. As long as Jews remain here, between the [Jordan] river and the sea, they will be our enemy and we will continue to pursue and kill them."

Many times, Ehud Olmert has justified his withdrawal plans on a single premise: Palestinian claims of large population increase. Like most assertions of left-wing ideologues and of Arab leaders, this has no basis in reality. The most authoritative study demolishes these claims as " voodoo demographics."
Today brings more confimation of this trend: in the past 5 years, the Muslim birthrate has plummeted 17.5%, while Jewish births are stable.
Additionally, there is another supporting factor--violence has skyrocketed in Palestinian-controlled areas, and therefore emigration has likely risen accordingly. Because Arabs in Israel's vicinity are not a distinct nation, they easily assimilate throughout the Middle East and elsewhere.

A must-read by David Frum: Perhaps you saw the images in your newspaper or on television:
A Lebanese man counts U.S dollar bills received from Hezbollah members in a school in Bourj el-Barajneh, a southern suburb of Beirut, August 19, 2006. Hezbollah handed out bundles of cash on Friday to people whose homes were wrecked by Israeli bombing, consolidating the Iranian-backed group's support among Lebanon's Shiites and embarrassing the Beirut government. REUTERS/Eric Gaillard (LEBANON) This scene and dozens more like it flashed around the planet. Only one thing was missing--the thin wire security strip that runs from top to bottom of a genuine US$100 bill. The money Hezbollah was passing was counterfeit, as should have been evident to anybody who studied the photographs with due care.
Care was due because of Hezbollah's history of counterfeiting: In June, 2004, the U.S. Department of the Treasury publicly cited Hezbollah as one of the planet's leading forgers of U.S. currency.
But this knowledge was disregarded by the news organizations who queued up to publicize Hezbollah's pseudo-philanthropy. The passing of counterfeit bills was detected not by the reporters and photographers on the spot, but by bloggers thousands of miles away: SnappedShots.com, MyPetJawa and Charles Johnson's Little Green Footballs. These sites magnified photographs and showed them to currency experts and detected irregularity after irregularity in the bills.

What do we need to do these days? Not much. To prevent the renewal of war in Lebanon and to win the war should it begin anew. To avoid the outbreak of war with Syria and to win a war against it should one break out. To prevent Iran from developing its nuclear capability and to deter the country should it become a nuclear power. To build the Israel Defense Forces from the foundations up, as fast as possible. To rehabilitate the political system immediately. To come up with a leadership from thin air. To formulate, overnight, a national strategy. To carry out a regime change. To initiate a revolution in values. To reestablish the Israeli republic.
The timetable is tight. Very tight indeed. The cease-fire in Lebanon is not stable and will not be. The truce is caught in the dilemma of whether to come to terms with Hezbollah's powerful presence or whether to take forceful action against the organization and chance an escalation. There is total uncertainty also along the Syrian border. The possibility of a sudden Syrian move on the Golan Heights is not out of the question.
On the other hand, on the Iranian front the picture is crystal clear: By wintertime the moment of truth will come. If the United States attacks Iran, Israel will be attacked. If the United States does not attack, Israel will be faced with the most serious challenge to its existence since the day of its establishment.
Those who say that there is no comparison between the situation at the end of the second Lebanon War and the situation at the end of the Yom Kippur War are right. The current situation is by far more dramatic. Indeed, the number of fresh graves in military cemeteries at the end of this summer is much smaller than that after the fall of 1973, but the situation at the end of the war is much, much more fragile and dangerous.
In the fall of 1973, Israel was perceived by its neighbors as a wounded but powerful bully. At the end of summer 2006, it is viewed by its neighbors as a scarred, impotent wimp. In the fall of 1973, the American superpower regarded Israel as a bleeding lion. In 2006, the U.S. sees Israel as a fat hound dog that has lost its nerve and its value.
In 1973, the IDF emerged from the war with chief of staff David Elazar and Major Generals Yitzhak Hofi, Yisrael Tal and Arik Sharon threatening both Cairo and Damascus. In the end of the summer of 2006, the IDF is emerging from the fighting with the head of Northern Command Udi Adam, Deputy Chief of Staff Moshe Kaplinsky and Chief of Staff Dan Halutz not even posing a threat to the Al-Khiam ridge.

The criticism within Labor was led by ministers Ophir Pines-Paz and Eitan Cabel, who announced that they would vote against the commission outlined by Olmert and said they would try to persuade other ministers to do the same. The Labor Party chairman, Defense Minister Amir Peretz, declined Monday to comment on Olmert's decision.
Pines-Paz called for a state commission, calling it the right way and the only way, to investigate the war. "I intend to oppose [Olmert's decision] in the government, and will try to convince other ministers," he said. "The commission Olmert has appointed to investigate the political echelons does not have clear authority or a timetable, and increasing the number of commissions of inquiries will lead to chaos."
Olmert's decision is likely to further enrage critics, who say that the prime minister and other top officials should be the focus of the investigation and not its overseer.
Critics have been demanding a full-blown state commission of inquiry that has the authority to dismiss officials. Israel has carried out such inquiries after past crises - including the 1982 Lebanon War - that led to the dismissal of then defense minister Ariel Sharon.

They come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, but MKs Matan Vilna'i and Yuval Steinitz share some strikingly similar sentiments about the failures of the war in the North. In their analyses, expressed in separate interviews, many of the flaws stem not from a lack of information on the enemy, but from an appalling inability to internalize and act on that information.
Matan Vilna'i: When the chief of staff presents a war plan, ministers have to ask him the right questions, to be sure they know what Israel is getting into. That didn't happen.
Yuval Steinitz: The blunders of the war in Lebanon reflect a combination of complacency and dubious dogma. I'm worried that we're still underestimating the threat.

The key founders of Kadima, including Ehud Olmert and Ariel Sharon, were intimately involved in the blatant and illegal cronyism for which Omri Sharon was convicted. On the day of Ariel Sharon's demise, police had announced sufficient evidence for his conviction. There have been regular reports of the garden variety form. Is it any wonder that the protection and management of the country has been completely subverted in the face of their personal political gain?
Consider the two most powerful ministers Olmert appointed. The Defense Minister had almost no military experience. He even lacked management experience in any constructive endeavor. The Foreign Minister cannot speak English, which is the prerequisite to international diplomacy and the language of Israel's only ally.
Israelis ignored the lesson of Ariel Sharon's passing: utter negligence regarding simple health precautions when they conflicted with political manipulations. What is amazing is that the consequence of failure in the north will be millions of dollars sent to deal with the crisis, which will then be exploited by the parasitic protexia class. Of course, this was obvious before the election, as I wrote months ago:
Almost half of the Knesset members in the government are now "ministers." What is not well understood is that these new ministries will be staffed by ever-growing legions of political cronies. Sharon's systemic corruption in political appointments (despite his promises to the contrary) will likely prove to be one of his most lasting legacies. Get ready for a lot more of this collaboration between Olmert and Peretz. This is what I predicted before the last election, saying "Israel is heading for long-term disaster by placing these [Kadima] foxes, along with Peretz's Labor, in the henhouse rules committee." Here, then, is today's nepotism news: Allegations of political appointments in the Authority for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses during Ehud Olmert's term as minister of industry, trade and labor are included in a report released early Monday morning by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss....Lindenstrauss found that under the stewardship of Olmert and ministry director-general Ra'anan Dinur, the ministry changed the rules of the authority and appointed a woman with close political ties to Olmert as the deputy director-general. She, in turn, appointed at least three new project managers who were members of the Likud central committee.
According to the report, the three were appointed according to improper procedures and without giving others a fair chance at the job. Two of the projects were not even originally included in the annual work schedule for the year in which the politically connected managers were hired....Instead, the Industry and Trade Ministry changed the rules of the authority to increase the minister's influence on the allocation of its budget and the appointment of its director-general.
They also added a new position of deputy director-general and appointed attorney Lilach Nehemia to fill it. One year earlier, the Raviv Committee had rejected her candidacy for the job of public representative on the board of directors of the Government Tourism Company because of her personal and political links and lack of any special skills.
Nehemia took up her job in mid-2004. One year later, 10 to 14 project managers were heading authority projects, of whom half had started working after her appointment. Three of the managers were members of the Likud central committee....
The first project manager, Shimon Moshe, was appointed head of a project for the disabled. He was paid NIS 27,000 a month including expenses. At the same time, Olmert presented him as a candidate for the job of deputy head of the Employment Service, even though he did not meet the educational requirements. Other candidates were automatically disqualified for failing to meet the same requirements....Meanwhile, Moshe was forced to leave his job as project manager following a petition to the High Court of Justice. However, the authority appointed him to manage another project.
The second project manager, Yitzhak Michaeli, was first put in charge of a project to help Beduin and then to participate in a survey regarding outsourcing for Israeli Arabs. After one month, the Beduin project was stopped for lack of funds. He received NIS 140,000 for the outsourcing project even though it was not clear what work he did....Lindenstrauss found that Padida [the third project manager] did not submit detailed monthly work reports and that it was not clear how much work he had done. It is not clear how much work was done recently in defending the country or dealing with the home front emergency.

Man bites dog news: Palestinian introspection, by Khaled Abu Toameh:
In an article published Sunday, Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled PA, questioned the effectiveness of Kassam rocket attacks on Israel and noted that since Israel evacuated Gaza, the situation there has deteriorated on all levels. Dismissing Israel's responsibility for the growing state of anarchy and lawlessness in Gaza, Hamad said it was time for the Palestinians to embark on a soul-searching process to see where they erred. "We're always afraid to talk about our mistakes," he added. "We're used to blaming our mistakes on others. What is the relationship between the chaos, anarchy, lawlessness, indiscriminate murders, theft of land, family rivalries, transgression on public lands and unorganized traffic and the occupation? We are still trapped by the mentality of conspiracy theories - one that has limited our capability to think."
Hamad admitted that the Palestinians have failed in developing Gaza following the Israeli withdrawal and in imposing law and order. He said about 500 Palestinians have been killed and 3,000 wounded since the Israeli pullout, in addition to the destruction of much of the infrastructure. By comparison, he said, only three or four Israelis have been killed by the rockets fired from Gaza over the same period.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has established committees of inquiry devoid of any real basis and lacking in public credibility. The results they produce will be viewed with distrust.
Olmert is well aware of the differences between the various tools of inquiry. He evaded the governmental decision to establish a state committee because it would have been comprised of members nominated by the president of the Supreme Court, and because a former senior Supreme Court justice would have headed it. Olmert knows that the public would attribute great importance to the findings of such a committee.
The prime minister has also circumvented a governmental committee of inquiry headed by a former senior justice - a committee that would have had the investigative authorities of a state committee of inquiry.
Olmert's laboratory has concocted committees of inquiry that are internal by nature, even if they do include members outside the system.
Even if the committee does have any actual investigate authority, the fact that the government has control over nominating its members and the publication of its report turn the governmental inquiry into a national farce.
Olmert hasn't gained anything by creating the committees. He hasn't even bought himself a political grace period. It is likely that that voices calling for a state committee of inquiry and political responsibility won't be quieted any time soon.
The High Court of Justice is supposed to review a petition calling for the creation of a state committee of inquiry. In the past such petitions have been rejected. However, it has been made clear that judicial intervention is possible in "unusual and irregular" cases. The second Lebanon war is precisely that.

PM nixes call to form stronger state commission because it "would paralyze entire system. It "would not prepare for the future, which is to deal with the Iranian threat." According to Olmert, "A state inquiry commission headed by a judge would paralyze the entire system. Everyone would then get a lawyer and concentrate on how to pin the blame on someone else."

Let this end once and for all two widely-believed canards: Christians only support Israel in order to convert them in an eschatological scheme.
The American government supports Israel because of the small minority of Jews. I would not be surprised if less than 42% of Jews believe Israel was God-given The amazing thing is that there are imams who also believe the Koran says Israel was given to the Jews forever (of course, there is a large incentive to keep that opinion to themselves).
