Ynet's Roni Sofer reports that Israel's prime minister Olmert and the cabinet may consider supporting a ceasefire treaty with international forces deployed in the Gaza Strip, ostensibly to police and prevent Hamas' rearmament and return to terror.
IMRA's Aaron Lerner notes:
There is a fairly straightforward explanation for PM Olmert’s interest in an international force: The Olmert-Livni team adamantly claims that the Second Lebanon War was a fantastic success because it concluded with the introduction of the grossly ineffective international force… They thus see their reputations tied to the validity of using international forces.
Based on Israel's unfortunate history with international "peacekeeping" forces in Sinai, Lebanon, Gaza and Hebron, such a force will at best do nothing to prevent terror or even war against Israel, and at worst will actively protect the terrorists. If such a force is brought into Gaza now to separate the two sides, Israel will be in a worse position than before, regardless of how many Hamas buildings and missiles are destroyed.
