Israelis are the most patriotic people in the Western world according to a survey taken by the Institute for Policy and Strategy at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.
85% of all respondents did express a willingness to fight compared to 63% in the US, 53% in Italy, 51% in France, 37% in Spain, 32% in Germany and 32% in Japan.
Because of the large percentage of Arabs surveyed,
close to 100% of Israeli Jews said they would be willing to fight for their country. There were also surprising results from Israeli Arabs:
-77% (compared to 66% of Jews) believe that Israel is better than most other countries, especially with regard to social welfare.
-53% (compared to 17% of Jews) expressed pride in the welfare state
-82% (compared to 87% of Jews) expressed an intention and desire to continue living in Israel, regardless of security hazards or the state of the economy.
-86% (equal to the 86% of Jews) would encourage their children to continue living in Israel.
Other interesting results--patriotism was strongest among Israelis:
-without university education
-on the political right
-who are religious
-who are older
Additionally, patriotism increased slightly during the years of the second intifada (2000 to 2005).
