Hope that International Pressure will Moderate Hamas

Hamas met the question of whether they will change their stripes with a loud 'no': no recognition of Israel, no negotiations, no renunciation of terror....But the world holds out hope that international pressure can make them more moderate.

Hamas is indistinguishable in outlook from al-Qaeda. Indeed there is significant evidence that they are connected. Has international pressure made bin Laden more moderate? Is there evidence of a single Islamist (or any genocidal anti-Semite) moderating opinions because of international pressure? One must conclude that leftism is a faith system in which reality is not relevant.

You fail to state the real truth here, namely that when the Left talks about "pressure" what they really mean is incentives -- recognition, negotiations, funding and more. In other words, the carrot, NOT the stick.

Being soft on terror, communism, Saddam, bin Laden or whomever else is the enemy is the hallmark of the Left. The only time the Left supports pressure is when they present a softer form of pressure as an alternative to a stronger form, such as sanctions instead of war.

Therefore for these people to talk about "pressure" being used to moderate Hamas is far worse than their being naive. They are actually being disingenuous, using false terminology that will sound nice to convince their listeners to accept a policy the listeners would normally oppose.
