... Everybody followed the established pattern. The reporter provided the accepted excuse, Queria made the expected sounds and Collin Powell made clear that no price will be paid for killing Americans. Indeed, the US did not lift a finger to bring the mastermind of the attack, Abu Samhadana, to justice. If he finally met his deserved fate earlier this month, it was because Israel got lucky, not because the US pursued him.

If the logic is reminiscent of the anti-Semitic dialectic, it is. Yet, there is a difference. In this case the victims are not members of a small vulnerable minority but the official representatives and the citizens of the world's foremost super power. If they are vulnerable, it is because they are betrayed by those entrusted to protect their interests around the world, their own diplomatic corp.
